If you plug your ears and let the shower fall on your back, you can hear the water echoing inside your chest. It’s a strange sound. It’s not a sound you ever hear waking or sleeping, in the house or outside the house. There’s nothing in all the world like that sound, because you’re hearing your own inner world. And you can hear it because of the echo inside you. The water pounding on your back, reverberating inside, and heard by ears stopped to the outer world, but listening to the inner world. And what you hear is that there’s still room in you. You’re not as solid as you think.
September and January have been redesigned in the age of public education: they’re designed to make you insane. School starts, sports start, church starts. Clubs and activities and groups–they all want a piece of you. New Year’s resolutions are made to rise like the dead, only to head back to the graves from which they came, till they’re summed forth again next year.
All this in January! February hasn’t even got here yet! And you’re full. There’s not anything left. You do what you can do, and that’s it.
Maybe. Maybe there’s not much left outside.
But there is still room inside. I’m saying that you’re not as full as you think. In fact, there’s quite a lot left in you. There’s still room.
There is still time.
Don’t get sleepy on me. Don’t give up on me.
It is not time to sleep, but to wake!
Ephesians 5:14
Awake, O Sleeper!
And arise from the dead,
And Christ will shine on you.
And then v 18:
Be filled with the Spirit
There is still room in you! If you listen carefully you can hear that it is true. The Lord is not so demanding as January. He’s not going to overwhelm you with permission slips and division homework and sports and a million other obligations. But he’s still here. He is patiently waiting for you. He would like to build a home with you. You may feel cramped, but I’m saying that there is room inside you for one of these Prosper sized homes!
Listen to the sound of the inner world. There’s still room.
