Katie texts me this while I’m working at church:

State of the nation:

Cameron: burned arm taking tortilla out of microwave. Starts profuse weeping. I tell him to go chill upstairs. Comes down half an hour later, “Mom, both my arms hurt so bad.”

“What does it feel like?”

“Like I’m in H.E.L.L.”

“Go take a nap.”

Simeon: spends all lunch-time making homemade lemonade. Now is making lunch while we’re all done. He uses a new pan for eggs, even though there was another one in front of him in the sink.

Kathryn is reading on the couch.

To all this I reply, “Start yelling. That’s what I would do.”

You got a plan? Life’s gonna blow it up. Learn to laugh and be free, or you’re not going to make it. Laugh, be free. Do your best with kids and spouses and work and life, and then laugh and be free. Do your best! I’m not saying that your should act like some freewheeling hippie. Do your best. But . . . you can control almost nothing. Can’t control your spouse. Can’t control how your kids will turn out. Can’t control much at work (even if you are the boss!).

But you serve someone who controls all. He is King now. Not only King someday. King now. So you? You, servant of the King, be free.
